Poets, writers, philanthropists and common people like me often say love is boundless , sometimes in captivating phrases and proses and sometimes in simple words or silence. Yes, true love knows no boundaries.

Last week I decided to see a friend of mine who has returned from the hospital after delivering an angel. She is someone who is always seen by me as an epitome of a brave woman. She is inspiring in many ways. Every time I see her ,I am staggered by her appearance on the stage of this world. A fearless mother,a loving wife, an adorable daughter,a caring sister and a compassionate doctor-fulfilling every role to its completion-that’s her!!

We were sipping her special green tea from Pakistan in her living room, while the little one dreamt on her baby chair and elder one watched Thomas . We were into our conversation of career prospects, Ramadan ,children, heat strokes back home, and what not and I suddenly asked her ,”How is Mimi(her mother)?” She replied,” She is very fine, the new bhabhi(daughter in law )is with her now.”

Mimi ; I had met her only once but she was so pious. She was someone straight from God’s door! We were invited for lunch and she made vegetarian food for me especially. After the lunch we sat watching animal videos and she in her Persian accent commented,” When these animals can love each other so easily, why not we humans? She made me lie down in her lap like my mother would have done and I felt I was like a toddler in her warm hands. Mimi -the mother!!

I have been remembering her for some weeks now. So I said to my friend ,”Is it OK to talk to her while she is fasting ?” She did not reply to my question but dialled a number, the voice from the other side broke,” Hello, Deepti kaisi hai aap(how are you),husband kaise hai (how is your husband) ?” She was pouring her affection in every word she said while she had not had a sip of water yet and while Pakistan’s weather had been really hot. I replied everything is alright. Then she asked me about my job, having a baby and health. I confirmed to her  job is going okay and we are all doing very well. There was a little conversation about baba(my friend’s father), green tea, her visit to the UK and my plans to take her around India. She was sounding as motherly as ever and then she said,” I have kept some green tea for you.Inshallah, you will be blessed with a good job and a baby very soon. Mein Allah se dua karungi( I will pray for you)!” We bid goodbyes and hung up the phone. I was feeling reassured, I was feeling as if it was my Amma talking to me. The endearment ,the love was so natural and true ,that it had to flow and it had to flow beyond geographic boundaries. That was from a mother to a daughter!!

 I sit on the couch,

with my filter coffee,

I am often by myself,

watching a soap on tele!

I miss those days,

when you were around,

when we spread the mat,

and together we sat,

we sat for hours,

talking to each other.

Then I lied down in your lap,

you ran your fingers in my hair,

I don’t know when, but I took a nap.

You whispered in my ear,

“Get up ,my dear!,

time for some milk before you go out,

to play with your pals on the streets ,

to scream and shout!”

I came back stained in the soil ,

you soaked me up for a bath,

and you put the soup to boil .

You fed the hungry me,

and held me in your arms ,

until I would sleep !

I miss those days,

when you were around ,

I miss those days,

when I was not on my own!

I am sorry- I am away Amma,

When you need me,when you are alone!!

From a daughter to a mother( Amma,Mimi, mummy ji)
